Devin's DTK Set Review

March 20, 2015
White | Blue | Black | Red | Green | Multicolored | Lands/Colorless ]

White

Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit
monowhite aggro/devotion, which might be a thing, which would be nice since it's the only devotion color that never really got there the first time around
Arashin Foremost
same as previous but not as good, don't want your 3 drop getting killed by Wild Slash
Center Soul
UW Heroic, probably worse than 1 costed options but being able to save a guy from removal then make him "unblockable" the following turn would be good
Dragon Hunter
monowhite aggro, especially if dragons are a thing, still sucks versus Stormbreath
Fate Forgotten
random sideboard card, probably just worse than other options
Gleam of Authority
another kind of interesting UW Heroic potential
Hidden Dragonslayer
legit good card, kills opponent's best dude then is a 3/2 lifelinker, an insane card to manifest
Myth Realized
this might be a real thing in some sort of white control, good mana sink, not vulnerable unless you want it to be, can be huge, might even be better than I think
Ojutai Exemplars
with so many options on a reasonable body it has to be playable in something
Orator of Ojutai
all the dragon bonus cards need to stand on their own without a dragon, this probably falls short but flying Wall of Omens is real good
Pacifism
it's Pacifism, funny flavor text
Profound Journey
so expensive but extremely powerful effect
Radiant Purge
solid sideboard card
Secure the Wastes
missed this the first time through, it seems possibly really good, instant speed scalable Raise the Alarm seems sweet, EOT x=a lot>untap>Dictate of Heliod
Silkwrap
probably bad, maybe cool in a Modern enchantress esque deck
Surge of Righteousness
another fine sideboard card, attacking/blocking restriction sucks but not that much
Back to Top

Blue

Anticipate
probably my favorite card in the set, likely singlehandedly makes control really viable again
Contradict
why can't this be Dismiss
Dragonlord's Prerogative
Opportunity has been good enough in the past, and this is a dragon bonus card that stands on it's own fine
Encase in Ice
another good sideboard card, notably a great anti Stormbreath card for UW control, don't miss that it has Flash
Gudul Lurker
maybe monoblue devotion, but probably too bad
Icefall Regent
seems pretty good, Frost Titan and Dungeon Giests have both been playable and this is smack dab in the middle
Illusory Gains
not good but so cool
Learn from the Past
maybe a bad sideboard card
Living Lore
Exile Dig, have 8/8 with no evasion, be sad, reread the card and realize it just has to deal damage, not necessarily to a player, still bad, but better
Mirror Mockery
mostly pacifisms a guy with potential upside, probably not bad in mono blue devotion, stick it on their Rhino and activate Bident, stick it on your Master of Waves and attack
Mystic Meditation
why don't you cost 3
Negate
still playable, sweet art
Profaner of the Dead
way too cute, but cool and powerful, very cool against tokens and small dudes, notably you can play this card and sacrifice it to it's own ability, also of note, it doesn't hit creature with the same toughness as the sacrificed creatures, only less
Shorecrasher Elemental
if monoblue is going to happen again this is how, also is an Elemental for Master of Waves
Silumgar Sorcerer
This card has potential, another mono blue possible
Silumgar's Scorn
Force Spike might be good enough when it at least has the chance to be Counterspell, even just the threat of Force Spike is often a powerful effect for control, forcing your opponent to play "off curve" is good
Skywise Teachings
kind of a Talrand where you trade payment free triggers for being less vulnerable, might be cool if TurboFog was a thing
Stratus Dancer
another good card for monoblue devotion, with Wrath costing 5 now, and having been a big weakness for the deck, a card like this that can get in under and flip to counter a Wrath effect is good
Back to Top

Black

Ambuscade Shaman
strong effect with enough haste/Dash
Blood-Chin Fanatic
I don't know, seems fine, at least it's a tribal relevant 3/3 for 3 that provides some reach
Blood-Chin Rager
2/2 for 2, ok ability, maybe if you want to play bad tribal
Corpseweft
super cool, combos with Risen Executioner, having the size of the token limited by creatures in the yard and not by mana available is nice, also lets you go big or go wide, whichever is better at the time
Damnable Pact
probably just better playing Sign in Blood or Read the Bones, undoubtedly powerful effect when relevant
Deathbringer Regent
don't know what deck would want this, but it would be sweet against some decks, *cough*GW Devotion*cough*
Defeat
bad, should be an instant at least
Duress
still Duress, can't decide if art is cool or sucks
Foul Renewal
might be fine in Rhino Mirrors, return a Rhino, kill theirs
Foul-Tongue Invocation
reasonable sacrifice effect, probably not good enough in this format, too many random expendables
Gravepurge
probably bad but I've always thought this card was kind of interesting, certainly better now than during Innistrad Standard
Hedonist's Trove
too expensive, maybe cool in control mirror until they Dig and delve away all relevant cards in response then just let it resolve because who cares
Pitiless Horde
seems good in monoblack aggro, I guess, 3 toughness is rough though, at least it attacks into Courser
Rakshasa Gravecaller
definitely bad but turning Satyr Wayfinder into 2 zombies seems cool
Risen Executioner
will either see a fair amount of play or almost none at all, combos with Corpseweft and delve and is essentially a free card draw when milled, not blocking sucks so much
Self-Inflicted Wound
don't know if this is good enough for sideboard, not getting to choose the creature really hurts it
Sidisi, Undead Vizier
good card, will see play alongside OG Sidisi, possibly elsewhere, let's you play more one of bullets or trim down on important cards that you just don't want to draw in multiples, like Whip
Silumgar Assassin
worse than the pseudo opposite white version, still not bad
Ultimate Price
Only really solid 2 costed black removal in the format
Virulent Plague
bad to ok sideboard card probably

Red

Commune with Lava
might be worse than Chandra or Outpost Seige but a very strong effect, it is an instant and says until the end of your next turn, most people misread that, might be good in non-Standard formats with Storm, although it's probably worse than Ad Nauseum there
Draconic Roar
seems like Searing Blaze and as far as the dragon bonus cards go this one is actually in the right color
Dragon Fodder
better now than it used to be
Dragon Whisperer
quintessential good monored card, the Formidable ability could just not be there and it would be exactly as playable
Ire Shaman
Goblin Piker+ is sometimes good enough, the upside on this is pretty high
Lightning Berserker
could be good in the right matchups at the right times, which is also it's problem
Magmatic Chasm
sideboard card if you want a Falter I guess
Rending Volley
not really sure what this does in standard, I guess if you want to kill Butcher of the Horde on the cheap, don't think the uncounterable part is relevant unless you are boarding it in against exactly new Ojutai, could have implications outside of Standard
Roast
this is better than Rending Volley in Standard, actually kills Rhino/Tasigur
Sarkhan's Triumph
not really sure why you would want this, maybe it doesn't suck
Seismic Rupture
who doesn't love bad Pyroclasm
Thunderbreak Regent
regular sort of obviously good card that you will have to kill and take 3 damage and then your opponent will play Stormbreath Dragon
Twin Bolt
what you get when you make Arc Trail an instant, not sure if there are enough 1 toughness guys to make this have value, but in a format with so much blocking it could turn obvious blocks into bad ones
Volcanic Vision
if there was some kind of Big Red deck this could be Plague Wind, but there probably isn't, so it's not
Zurgo Bellstriker
obviously good, you'll want to draw it in every opening hand but probably can't play 4
Back to Top

Green

Ainok Survivalist
if you morph it then it's exactly Nantuko Vigilante, otherwise it's just a more on curve creature, likely worse than Reclamation Sage most of the time, better with Manifest
Assault Formation
seems good in a Caryatid, Courser, Rhino mirror, one sided Doran has potential
Avatar of the Resolute
base stats look really good, if there is a deck that has some creatures with counters then this guy gets even better, also Reach+Trample is stupid (not the good kind of stupid)
Collected Company
this card wants to be good, it's not
Deathmist Raptor
I think this is the card Risen Executioner wants to be, with playable Morphs and Whisperwood Elemental and Mastery of the Unseen running around this is probably pretty good
Den Protector
Regrowth effect is very strong when attached to a creature, manifesting this off Whisperwood Elemental or Mastery of the Unseen would be the very definition of value
Display of Dominance
this seems like a good sideboard card against particularly Sultai Control, deals with Ashiok, Kiora, Garruk, and saves your stuff from their removal
Inspiring Call
if there is a deck with a critical mass of creatures with +1/+1 counters this card could be nuts
Obscuring Æther
I don't know what to say about this, maybe it does something
Servant of the Scale
Seems like a place to start for an Avatar of the Resolute deck
Shaman of Forgotten Ways
good even without the Formidable ability, which has to be true of any card with a Formidable ability
Sheltered Aerie
thought at first that it added 2 when the land tapped, like most of these types of cards, then realized that it gives it a separate ability so it sucks
Surrak, the Hunt Caller
A card that only has a Formidable ability is probably bad, at least this gets most of the way there on it's own
Back to Top

Multicolored

Atarka's Command
this card is good and will see plenty of play, probably even in modern
Boltwing Marauder
fights with Stormbreath and monored Sarkhan for the 5 drop dragon spot, loses
Dragonlord Atarka
this guy seems good, if there is a Whip deck that contains Jund colors then this guy would be nuts, also quite good in GR Devotion
Dragonlord Dromoka
solid anti control card with good stats
Dragonlord Kolaghan
this might be more anti control than the last one, this guy is expensive but scary
Dragonlord Ojutai
does most everything you want from a finisher in control, ends the game fast, survives until you untap after playing it, and gives card advantage/quality
Dragonlord Silumgar
probably mostly a sideboard card for when opponents take out removal when you're playing UB control, his best use is taking a Planeswalker the turn before it ultimates
Dromoka's Command
I really don't know how to evaluate this card, it costs 2 and is an instant and has a lot of reasonable options, so it's good?
Kolaghan's Command
Cheapish and has decent potential value, not sure where to put it though
Narset Transcendent
probably better in some sort of Jeskai Ascendancy deck's sideboard or something like that than in UW control, but it's probably fine there too
Ojutai's Command
if you can make the first ability do something then this card is probably quite good, otherwise it's playable but not insane
Pristine Skywise
probably just worse than Ojutai in decks where you want a protectable UW dragon finisher
Sarkhan Unbroken
this card is really good, he will be built around and splashed for, if Temur control can be a thing this would be amazing
Silumgar's Command
probably playable as a 1-2 of in UB control, costs 1 mana too much though
Swift Warkite
kind of cool, probably not good

Colorless/Lands

Ojutai Monument
I don't hate this card, let's you Wrath on 4 and can be a threat later, ability is probably way too expensive though, no variation between this cycle is also disappointing
Evolving Wilds
still playable, but now with colorful art
Haven of the Spirit Dragon
the card Crucible of the Spirit Dragon wishes it was, a 1 of in decks with an Ugin and a Silumgar
